Updated 2026-10-29 · We are not a lender. Free referral service.

In British Columbia, payday loans are governed by the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act and its payday loan regulation, enforced by Consumer Protection BC. BC also licenses other high-cost credit products. Here’s what applies in 2026.

The rules in BC

Alternatives in BC

Complaints

If a lender charges more than allowed, rolls over your loan or uses abusive collection, contact Consumer Protection BC. See also our national guide to payday loans in Canada.

A quick decision check

Ask yourself: will repaying the full amount on payday leave enough for rent, food and transportation? If not, the loan is likely to lead to another loan. Consider an alternative or a smaller amount.

Step by step: borrowing in BC

  1. Search the lender on Consumer Protection BC’s licensee list.
  2. Work out 50% of your net pay for the loan term; that’s the ceiling.
  3. Check the fee: no more than $14 per $100.
  4. Read the agreement for the total cost, APR, due date and default fee.
  5. Note your two-business-day cancellation right.

Example: a server with tips

Someone earning $1,100 net every two weeks, plus variable tips, could borrow at most $550 from a payday lender. At $14 per $100 for 14 days: $77 cost, $627 total. Basing the decision on a slow week’s income, not a good one, keeps repayment realistic.

Collection practices

BC sets limits on how and when lenders and collectors can contact you. Keep records of calls and messages; if they become harassing, file a complaint with Consumer Protection BC.

Common mistakes in BC

Consumer Protection BC publishes plain-language guides for borrowers; reading one before your first payday loan takes five minutes and can save a lot.

If you already have several loans

Multiple payday or high-cost loans at once usually mean your budget can’t absorb the repayments. In BC, non-profit credit counselling agencies can review your situation for free and may negotiate with lenders. Contact them before taking another loan. You can also ask each lender, in writing, for a payment arrangement; keep copies of all correspondence. Stopping new borrowing is the most important step, even before the old loans are repaid.

Consumer Protection BC also takes complaints about unlicensed lenders, so a quick report helps protect other borrowers too.

Consumer Protection BC licenses payday lenders and enforces the province’s payday loan rules.

Can I cancel a payday loan in BC?

Yes, BC gives borrowers two business days to cancel without paying any fee.

What is the maximum cost in BC?

No more than $14 per $100 borrowed under the federal cap; check Consumer Protection BC for any lower provincial limit.

Does BC regulate other high-cost loans?

Yes. BC licenses high-cost credit grantors (products above a set rate threshold) in addition to payday lenders. These lenders have their own disclosure and conduct rules.
